Local Food Travel: The Melt Mobile Food Truck
Last week we had a heatwave of epic temperatures. It was one of those weeks I had no interest in turning on the oven. I could barely handle boiling water! So, the best solution, in my mind, was the hit the food truck scene at our nearby outdoor beer garden. Thankfully, the garden is full of awesome food choices. Since my kids were with me (it was only 5pm) I decided to let them choose and we landed on The Melt Mobile, the local grilled cheese food truck.
Grilled cheese may seem like a ho-hum thing to serve up at a food truck but The Melt Mobile has a different take. Like The Local Meatball, this truck takes an average dish and elevates it to a whole new level. I love how food trucks do that, focus on one specific food and make it amazing. In this case, the hot grilled cheeses on a hot day actually worked and we had so much trouble deciding what to order we ended up with one of everything.
Unlike the grilled cheeses I make at home, which aren’t all that bad, The Melt Mobile uses an amazing blend of gruyere, jack, and cheddar cheeses. In the past I’ve usually just stuck with cheddar, but that clearly will change now! They also use copious amounts of butter on thick country bread. The toppings are just flavorful and thick but not too overdone.
I started with the classic grilled cheese topped with mushroom saute and caramelized onions. The minute it cools down in my kitchen I fully intend to recreate this specific sandwich with lots of ground shitake mushrooms, caramelized onions, and Sargento cheeses! It was boldy flavored with lots of earthy undertones from the mushrooms.
My husband went for the grilled cheese burger. Yes, a grilled cheese with a beef patty in the center: GENIUS! See what I mean about this food trucks mastering their specific cuisine?? It was kind of like a cheeseburger, but way better.
We also decided to split the pulled pork grilled cheese because who doesn’t like it to combine a pulled pork sandwich with a grilled cheese. It was another meaty delight and was the perfect filling sandwich with the right cheesy touch.
Finally, for dessert we decided to split the Strawberry Supreme sandwich. I’ll admit, we were a little unsure how the buttery sandwich would taste with the sweet mascarpone, nutella, and strawberry, but it was delicious! In fact, it was one of my favorites.
The best part is that we found out The Melt Mobile is available for all kinds of private events. My husband’s colleague is having it come to his late-night wedding reception later this month. How fun is that?! In the eyes of my family this truck is definitely a keeper. Once it cools down we’ll be hunting it down again!
